January: Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day

Well, I’m one-day late, but that’s because I spent most of January 15th sitting on an airplane.
So I’m back in Southern California – and hurrah! It’s supposed to be 80 degrees outdoors today. Early this morning, I snuck out to see what my garden has to share with you. Four new blooms, intentionally selected to show you something different from my December blooms. All of these came into my possession from the prior owners of our home, which we bought in August 2006.
A beautiful, mature Aloe – about to bloom
A sprawling Pelargonium – planted as a ground cover
Rosemary – blue blooms to blanket my hillside
Silvery lavender foliage offsets a rare late bloom

Gosh Debra, I am soooo jealous! The low last night was around -20C (-6F). I am still reading you lovely book, it is the sort of thing you want to take in small bites and savour every mouthful. I just get more and more envious and am conjuring up designs for a backyard log-cabin with walls 12″ thick, and solar-panels, and a windmill, and a wood-burning stove!

Wish it were 80F here. No, not really, that would really confuse my plants. We’re getting to 58F after highs of 19F for two days, and I’m one grateful red dirt girl. Sometime, darlin’ would you show us the layout of the garden left to you by the previous owners? I’d like to get a better feel for it. Until blogging, I swear, I never knew aloes bloomed.~~Dee

It’s good to see others with some blooms outside, and warmer temps. We’ve been below 0`F for several days now. Thanks for cheering me up with your blooms:-)

Like Dee, until I started blogging and reading blogs from gardeners around the country and the world, I never thought about aloe blooming. It’s just a houseplant to me. Same with rosemary. It’s a pretty little bloom.
Thanks for sharing different blooms with us this month. While you enjoyed 80 degrees, on Friday we started out at -12 and got to about 11.
